Prof. Dora Nkem Akunyili (OFR), the Hon Minister of Information and Communications, is an internationally renowned Pharmacist, Pharmacologist, Erudite Scholar, Seasoned Administrator, and a visionary leader. Prior to her present appointment, she was the Director General of National Agency For Food And Drug Control (NAFDAC).

EDUCATIONAL CAREER
Prof. Akunyili’s educational career started with her passing the First School Leaving Certificate with Distinction in 1966, and the West African School Certificate (W.A.S.C.) with Grade I Distinction in 1973 (both in Nigeria), which earned her the Eastern Nigerian Government Post Primary Scholarship and the Federal Government of Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship respectively. It is remarkable that throughout her high school career, Dora Akunyili was always first in her class - a record that has never been broken in the school to date.

She got her B.Pharm (Hons) in 1978 and P.hD in 1985, both at University of Nigeria Nsukka (U.N.N.). Prof. Akunyili won the best student award in the school of Pharmacy in her very first year in the school and the Vice Chancellor’s Postgraduate and Research Leadership prize in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for 1984/85 and 1985/86 academic Sessions.

She was promoted to the rank of a Professor in October, 2000 by the same University.

WORKING/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Prof. Akunyili started her working career as a Hospital Pharmacist in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (U.N.T.H) Enugu in 1978. In 1981, she ventured into Academics as a Graduate Assistant (Research Fellow) in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, U.N.N. In the University system, she made a steady progress from lecturer I in 1986 until she was made Senior Lecturer in 1990.

She transferred to College of Medicine, U.N.N. in 1992 and became a Consultant Pharmacologist in 1996.

From 1992 to 1994, Prof. Akunyili served as a member of Anambra State’s Hospitals Management Board and State Advisory Council for Women Commission, and was appointed Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture in Anaocha Local Government of Anambra State, Nigeria from 1994 – 1996

Prof. Dora Akunyili was appointed Zonal Secretary of Petroleum Special Trust Fund (P.T.F.), coordinating all projects in the five South Eastern States of Nigeria from 1996 - 2000. In 2001 she was appointed the Director General of NAFDAC a position she held until December 2008 when she was appointed a Minister.

As a Scientist and a Scholar, she has presented 20 scientific papers based on research and 485 papers delivered locally and internationally on regulatory matters, published two books and 38 Journal Articles. She also supervised PhD and Masters candidates, and is currently supervising six Postgraduate students in the College of Medicine U.N.N.

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS/AWARDS
Prof. Akunyili has held positions of responsibility in University of Nigeria Nsukka which include: serving in six Senate Committees and various faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Committees of the University from 1986 –1992.

She is a very active member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (P.S.N.) where she has served in various capacities notably as the National Vice President of Association of Lady Pharmacists (1992-1995) and President of the Enugu State Branch from 1992-1998.

Prof. Akunyili was appointed the Chairman of West African Drug Regulatory Agencies Network (WADRAN) in March, 2006, Vice Chairman of the International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force (IMPACT) on 15th Nov. 2006. She is also a Post Doctorate Fellow of University of London, Fellow of the West African Post Graduate College of Pharmacists, and member of other learned societies, a few of which are New York Academy of Science, International Narcotics Control Board, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Expert Committee, Association for African Medicinal Plant Standards (AAMPS), Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) and International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD).

In 2001, Akunyili became the lighting rod for transparency and honesty in the public sector. She was appointed by President Obasanjo to head the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). As many Nigerians now testify, that appointment is indeed putting a round peg in a round hole, and it fitted perfectly.

Dora Akunyili had an outstanding success as the Director General of NAFDAC. Prior to her assumption of duty, food and drug regulation was chaotic, to say the least. All manners of adulterated, fake and substandard foods and drugs were dumped into Nigeria. Unscrupulous individuals made fortunes from such unwholesome practices, but Prof. Akunyili brought in a new culture of excellence and honesty into NAFDAC and the entire regulated environment. As a commentator in a national newspaper once wrote, “The NAFDAC Director General is a revolutionary. She has not only changed NAFDAC, she has also changed the pharmaceutical industry in the country.”

For her industry and commitment to the values of honesty and transparency, Prof. Akunyili has received over 540 Awards and Recognitions locally and internationally, prominent among which are: –
Integrity Award by Transparency International in South Korea (2003); Honoured as one of the 18 heroes (Health) of Time Magazine Worldwide by Time Magazine, New York (2005); Grassroots Human Rights Campaigner Award by Human Rights Defence Organization (International Service) in British House of Commons (2005); Special Award for Combating Economic Crime by International Chamber of Commerce-Commercial Crime Services London (2004); Pharmacist of the year Medal Award by International Pharmaceutical Federation, FIP (2005); Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by University of Bristol, London (2006); Honorary Georgia Citizen by The State of Georgia, USA (2006); Agribusiness, International Euro Market and Transbusiness Awards respectively for 2003, 2005 and 2006 by European Marketing Research Centre (EMRC),Brussels; Conferment with the National Order of the Federal Republic-OFR and Recognition as an Icon of Hope for Nigerians by President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (2002); Person of the Year 2005 Award by Silverbird Communications Ltd, Nigeria (2006).

PERSONAL INFORMATION
Prof. Akunyili was born in Makurdi, Benue State (Nigeria) on the 14th of July 1954 to Chief & Mrs. Paul Young Edemobi. She is a devout Catholic and is happily married to Dr. J.C. Akunyili, a Medical Practitioner and they are blessed with six children and two grand children. Her hobbies include reading and writing.

Good day Friends,

One of our beta testers came up with 6 simple ways of enjoying our unique platform and we believe it deserves to be on our official blog.we hope you find it useful.

Yes, I will highlight to you just 6 simple things you could do to be a top star at NaijaBorn.Com - I've already done them and they've proven positive to me.

1. You should open a profile, What I mean by a profile is "be a member". Joining Naijaborn is FREE and all you need is few clicks. Join NOW!

2. Provide your real data. i.e Your real name, valid email, true date-of-birth, real location (not in my bedroom or something silly) and your actual tribe.

3. Provide your real profession and don't be shy to enter a Student because a Medical Doctor or Entrepreneur isn't any better than you are. So make sure you enter your real profession.

4. Keep your biography simple, short and real. Don't leave it empty, because its very crucial and don't go on repeating your data again like "My name is Ahmad Mukoshy and I was born in Sokoto, blah blah". Say something you've not said in the above 3 steps.

5. Look for like-minded people and interact with them. I guess this is the most interesting part, but if you lack any of the above steps, you'll find it harsh because people wun't like to interact with someone they don't know (Stranger!).

6. Be productive, start writing Articles, Poems and Blog posts (like this one). That will call for you, awareness. It's also a credit been a productive someone isn't it?

So, make it fast and start enjoying NaijaBorn.Com - I've done them and I am now feeling on top of the sky here...

I am proud to be NaijaBorn.

Thanks for your support ahmad.

Naijaborn.com Team is pleased to announce the naijaborn.com search module.
After working for two weeks on engineering, design, coding and testing we can say we have the naijaborn.com search release 1.0. As usual we built it from scratch with little or no third party packages ;).
This is a happy moment here at the labs of Naijaborn mainly because we see alot of future in this module.
Search Ranking
The search results are ranked as a factor of user activity on the naijaborn.com platform. if you register and stay out of it, you will surely appear at the bottom of all search results that match your details ;).

How is this module important?
Case 1:
I just entered Lagos and I want to meet software developers in Lagos. I hit naijaborn.com and I search for "software developer lagos", I contact them and then I am able to network with like minded people in Lagos.
Same applies to going abroad, say you travel to London and you wish to meet nigerian entrepreneurs in London, all you do on naijaborn is search for "entrepreneur london".

Case 2:
I land on a website like aimtechng.com and I want to know the people behind the company. all I need to do is search naijaborn.com for the term "aimtechng.com" and I will automatically see naijaborn Ahmad Mukoshy in the result. This way its easy to know the team behind a web project or a company then get to contact them directly.

Future:
[mobile] The future of this search module could apply to mobile. Imagine something like IYAM.MOBI integrated to naijaborn.com and you can search for Nigerians world wide using simple SMS messages and get response via SMS. I can stand in Calabar and wish to contact a medical doctor. I will just take my phone send sms "medical doctor Calabar" to naijaborn.com sms gateway and naijaborn.com will give me results by sms of five doctors in Calabar with their numbers and I call them.
[maps] Imagine putting a map search functionality where you can find Nigerians world wide on the map and then view their naijaborn.com profiles and all.

We are still working on the search module and we will soon be adding things like natural language recognition where you can search for "web developer in nigeria using php" and get results.

There is more and our current beta testers and future users will help us a lot while they use it and give us feedback.

if you wish to test the solution please send an email to info@naijaborn.com

Thanks

Yesterday I worked for three hours and came up with the naijaborn.com official blog hosted here http://blog.naijaborn.com
It will be featuring articles from members of the naijaborn team, covering design, codes, announcements, ideas, decisions or anything readable.
on the right hand side, we have the RSS FEED for those who love to subscribe and follow the updates as they occur on the naijaborn.com platform.

That Night things deteriorated , Your heart n lungs struggled tofunction then your kidney shut down, You were on and off a respirator
then you slid into a coma induced by end stage renal failure. I can remember how I had to follow the ambulance the Ambulance to ST Nicholas for dialysis and hoping that it would be okay and we can all return home.

It came as a shock to me that you who drove urself to the hospital for medical check up didn’t return home, you were not on admission either,You left us to be with the one that treasured you and needed you
more.

You were a good dad; you sacrificed all you had to ensure thatwe got the best. I remember you everyday and I miss you, ur jokes, urlaughs, ur dance steps ( lol), ur bluntness. You were you, no one can
be like you or come close to you.

I would want to come back as your daughter again ; I would only askGod to give you longer years on earth. I really hoped you will bethere for my wedding, convocation, my baby dedication, and all thespecial times that I would have loved to share with you but God knowsbest that was why I sang “ What can I say unto the lord all have to
say is Thank you lord…

Thank you Lord … all through the burial becauseI am yet to recover from all this. The lesson I learnt is that I have to treasure my family and tell them how special they are to me as manytimes as I have the chance /opportunity to. It is really painful that
I never got to say good bye , I never had the chance to hear your last
words, it was as if you knew it would happen then you sent me off with
Jon B. Your little girl is with me… I will take care of her.

Four Long Years but God has seen us through. His grace has been
sufficient for us. I would want to thank all the people that stood by
us during this trying period … Alhaji Abu , Mr. white, my then
boyfriend ( lol)… Soffy n his family, the Abioduns, Adelokikis,
Fasuyis, Adegbayemus, Okoros, Mrs. Omoghene, Fatu, Ibironkes,
Ositades, Sylvia , Efe, Shanko, My wife, Eloho Baiyewu, Bukky Ogunade
, Kenneth, jacintho, benji… God bless u all.
