Born in 1982 is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and recording artist. Her stage name "Asa" means "Hawk" in Yoruba.Born Bukola Elemide, Asa was born in Paris, France to Nigerian parents. She was two years old when her family returned to live in Nigeria. Asa grew up in Lagos, in the south-western part of Nigeria.
She states that the city is "buzzing with energy but also home to a deep-rooted spirituality. Islam thrives shoulder to shoulder with Christianity in an atmosphere of tolerance, and the turbulent city moves endlessly in an infernal and yet harmonious ballet of love and hate, laughter and violence, poverty and wealth." However twenty years later Asa returned to Paris, which is where her life as an artist took wing. Asa was twelve when her mother sent her to one of the best schools in Nigeria.
But educational excellence had a bitter taste : five years of studies and hardship. When she came home, she discovered Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Lauryn Hill, Femi Kuti and Angélique Kidjo, in whose footprints she dreamed of following. At 18, Asa was very familiar with frustration.
The university was on strike, the choirs were snubbing her. During these frustrating times, Asa used to lock herself in her room and sing; this she said was very comforting.
Nevertheless, she managed to get her voice heard on a few radio talent shows and her first applause brought her boundless pleasure. She then signed up, in secret, for the Peter King’s School of Music and learnt to play the guitar in 6 months.
Background
Asa was the only girl in the family and had to share her parents with her three brothers. At a tender age she began to look after the house during her father and mother’s frequent absences.
That is when Asa started to sing. The desire to sing came to her and didn’t go away, carving out a permanent place in her soul. She preferred singing to talking, improvising endlessly until her mother made her stop.
Over the years her father had built up a fine collection of records featuring soul classics and Nigerian music, including Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey and Lagbaja and went on to draw inspiration from them. Asa said "I was a tomboy and when I was a teenager I became very shy because people made fun of me … in my own way, I was already attracting attention !
I got in the habit of never doing anything like everyone else.
People didn’t understand my low-pitched deep voice, the choirs didn’t want anything to do with me. I had to get to church first if I was to have any chance of getting near the mike"
In 2004 Asa met her manager, Janet, who introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, who in turn became her musical partner. He enabled Asa, the free spirit, to find her bearings : songs in English and Yoruba, music falling somewhere between pop and soul, inspired by her musical heritage — with particular care paid to the melodies — and reflecting the feeling she puts into it.
Her texts talk about her country, the things in life, the things in her life, all delivered with feigned naïveté and real irony.
She states "I like writing or thinking about my texts on the bus, or the molué, as we call it. 49 seats, 99 passengers standing up, as Fela described it.
Everyone’s squashed up together and mini-dramas break out all the time. And, at the end of the day, we still manage to laugh, that’s where our strength lies..." It was at this stage of her life that Asa finally returned to Paris.
This was her chance to test out her talent on the French musical scene, playing with artists such as the Nubians, Manu Dibango, Doctor L and Tony Allen.
In the meantime, back in Nigeria, her first single, Eyé Adaba, then Jailer, were beginning to get airtime.
MTV chose her as the ambassador for South Africa. Her popularity became big, that when she came back to Nigeria she opened for Akon, John Legend, Beyoncé and Snoop Dogg amongst others.
Asa soon signed to the 'Naïve label'. Partnered by Cobhams, and with the new involvement of Christophe Dupouy, she produced a magnificent debut album, ASA.
R&b rubs up against pop, with reggae also making an appearance on 'Fire On The Mountain', the first track released from the album, an impertinent and barely-disguised metaphor for an ignorant and indifferent world. "Jailer", another highlight of the album, reinterprets the old adage “you reap what you sow”.
This emblematic song with its irresistible refrain opens the album by denouncing modern slavery in all its forms.Asa's song Eye Adaba featured in the 3rd episode of series 3 of the E4's teen tv show, Skins, in which congolese youngster Thomas is forced to return to Congo from Bristol, where he was living in a flat owned by Johnny White, and made new friends in Pandora, Effy and the rest of the cast. The song is used for the scene in which Thomas is told be pack his bags by his mother and he is upset at having to leave.

Prof. Akunyili’s educational career started with her passing the First School Leaving Certificate with Distinction in 1966, and the West African School Certificate (W.A.S.C.) with Grade I Distinction in 1973 (both in Nigeria), which earned her the Eastern Nigerian Government Post Primary Scholarship and the Federal Government of Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship respectively. It is remarkable that throughout her high school career, Dora Akunyili was always first in her class - a record that has never been broken in the school to date.
She got her B.Pharm (Hons) in 1978 and P.hD in 1985, both at University of Nigeria Nsukka (U.N.N.). Prof. Akunyili won the best student award in the school of Pharmacy in her very first year in the school and the Vice Chancellor’s Postgraduate and Research Leadership prize in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for 1984/85 and 1985/86 academic Sessions.
She was promoted to the rank of a Professor in October, 2000 by the same University.
WORKING/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Prof. Akunyili started her working career as a Hospital Pharmacist in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (U.N.T.H) Enugu in 1978. In 1981, she ventured into Academics as a Graduate Assistant (Research Fellow) in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, U.N.N. In the University system, she made a steady progress from lecturer I in 1986 until she was made Senior Lecturer in 1990.
She transferred to College of Medicine, U.N.N. in 1992 and became a Consultant Pharmacologist in 1996.

In 2001, Akunyili became the lighting rod for transparency and honesty in the public sector. She was appointed by President Obasanjo to head the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). As many Nigerians now testify, that appointment is indeed putting a round peg in a round hole, and it fitted perfectly.
Dora Akunyili had an outstanding success as the Director General of NAFDAC. Prior to her assumption of duty, food and drug regulation was chaotic, to say the least. All manners of adulterated, fake and substandard foods and drugs were dumped into Nigeria. Unscrupulous individuals made fortunes from such unwholesome practices, but Prof. Akunyili brought in a new culture of excellence and honesty into NAFDAC and the entire regulated environment. As a commentator in a national newspaper once wrote, “The NAFDAC Director General is a revolutionary. She has not only changed NAFDAC, she has also changed the pharmaceutical industry in the country.”
For her industry and commitment to the values of honesty and transparency, Prof. Akunyili has received over 540 Awards and Recognitions locally and internationally, prominent among which are: –
Integrity Award by Transparency International in South Korea (2003); Honoured as one of the 18 heroes (Health) of Time Magazine Worldwide by Time Magazine, New York (2005); Grassroots Human Rights Campaigner Award by Human Rights Defence Organization (International Service) in British House of Commons (2005); Special Award for Combating Economic Crime by International Chamber of Commerce-Commercial Crime Services London (2004); Pharmacist of the year Medal Award by International Pharmaceutical Federation, FIP (2005); Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by University of Bristol, London (2006); Honorary Georgia Citizen by The State of Georgia, USA (2006); Agribusiness, International Euro Market and Transbusiness Awards respectively for 2003, 2005 and 2006 by European Marketing Research Centre (EMRC),Brussels; Conferment with the National Order of the Federal Republic-OFR and Recognition as an Icon of Hope for Nigerians by President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (2002); Person of the Year 2005 Award by Silverbird Communications Ltd, Nigeria (2006).

4. Keep your biography simple, short and real. Don't leave it empty, because its very crucial and don't go on repeating your data again like "My name is Ahmad Mukoshy and I was born in Sokoto, blah blah". Say something you've not said in the above 3 steps.
5. Look for like-minded people and interact with them. I guess this is the most interesting part, but if you lack any of the above steps, you'll find it harsh because people wun't like to interact with someone they don't know (Stranger!).

Naijaborn.com Team is pleased to announce the naijaborn.com search module.
After working for two weeks on engineering, design, coding and testing we can say we have the naijaborn.com search release 1.0. As usual we built it from scratch with little or no third party packages ;).
This is a happy moment here at the labs of Naijaborn mainly because we see alot of future in this module. Search Ranking
The search results are ranked as a factor of user activity on the naijaborn.com platform. if you register and stay out of it, you will surely appear at the bottom of all search results that match your details ;).
How is this module important? Case 1:
I just entered Lagos and I want to meet software developers in Lagos. I hit naijaborn.com and I search for "software developer lagos", I contact them and then I am able to network with like minded people in Lagos.
Same applies to going abroad, say you travel to London and you wish to meet nigerian entrepreneurs in London, all you do on naijaborn is search for "entrepreneur london".
Case 2:
I land on a website like aimtechng.com and I want to know the people behind the company. all I need to do is search naijaborn.com for the term "aimtechng.com" and I will automatically see naijaborn Ahmad Mukoshy in the result. This way its easy to know the team behind a web project or a company then get to contact them directly.
Future: [mobile] The future of this search module could apply to mobile. Imagine something like IYAM.MOBI integrated to naijaborn.com and you can search for Nigerians world wide using simple SMS messages and get response via SMS. I can stand in Calabar and wish to contact a medical doctor. I will just take my phone send sms "medical doctor Calabar" to naijaborn.com sms gateway and naijaborn.com will give me results by sms of five doctors in Calabar with their numbers and I call them. [maps] Imagine putting a map search functionality where you can find Nigerians world wide on the map and then view their naijaborn.com profiles and all.
We are still working on the search module and we will soon be adding things like natural language recognition where you can search for "web developer in nigeria using php" and get results.
There is more and our current beta testers and future users will help us a lot while they use it and give us feedback.
if you wish to test the solution please send an email to info@naijaborn.com
